My blog is all about finding the “beauty within” something: your home, an outdated furniture piece, every day life. It also is all about using reusing items in different ways. So when I saw this used dollhouse at a consignment shop, I thought that would look so cool painted black and as a Halloween house! So of course it came home with me! This is a super simple and inexpensive transformation I think you will LOVE! Let me show you how to make an easy DIY Halloween house.
DIY Halloween House Decorations
For me, there is just something about being able to tell people I made that! I love making DIY Halloween decorations for my home and I love to get my kiddos to help. That way year after year when we decorate our home we can say remember when we made this together. It’s a great way to make your house a home, and filled with fun family memories together.
Another great reason to DIY instead of buy new is cost. You can save money by making it yourself. If I bought a Halloween house of this size in the store new, it would have cost me over $100! Let’s breakdown what my cost was to make this easy DIY Halloween house.
Easy DIY Halloween House Cost
What did it cost to make this large DIY Halloween house?
I bought the large dollhouse at a kid’s consignment store for $8.50!
Then, I went to Dollar Tree and bought all the accessories for $11.25.
I always have extra paint around my house, I am a DIYer and crafter, so I did not include that into my cost.
So the total cost was under $20 to make!
A Halloween house of this size new, would have cost me over $100! A total of $20 makes this an inexpensive DIY project.

A dollhouse (can be a used one to save on cost – check consignment stores, thrift stores, garage sales, Facebook Marketplace, antique stores)
Black spray paint (or any dark paint color of our choice)
Halloween decorations for the house (you can customize how you want. I went to Dollar store and got spiders, bats, fairy lights, and a small witches cauldron. You could get googly eyes, black construction paper, foam balls, ghosts, skeletons, spider web, get creative and use what you want)
Step One: Pick Our Your House
You can pick whatever style you would like for your DIY Halloween house. I liked that mine looked a little Victorian.
I would recommend picking a used one to save on cost. Check consignment stores, thrift stores, garage sales, Facebook Marketplace, antique stores.
I found mine at a kid’s consignment store for $8.50!
Step Two: Clean Your House
Wipe down your doll house and make sure there is no dirt or dust on it. The paint will not stick if your house is dirty.
Step Three: Paint Your House
Spray your house black or whatever color you would like. Allow time to dry completely before adding your accessories.
I did not sand mine before painting. If you feel like you need to sand yours, go ahead.
Step Four: Decorate and Accessorize Your House
This is where you can get creative and decorate it how you want. I went to the dollar store first to find cheap items. I found some great things! The dollar store is one of my favs, it is an inexpensive way to decorate and craft.
Some Halloween décor and accessories ideas for the house: bats, fake cobwebs, spiders, skeletons, ghosts, fairy lights, diy ghosts, spooky light, black light, orange light, purple light, flameless candle, old dolls, giant spiders, crystal ball, Halloween ribbon or lace, etc.
You can decide to make yours super scary and use a creepy decoration theme, or you can go less scary and just go with fun and cute Halloween décor.
Just use a little hot glue to attach your decorations to the house.
Your DIY Halloween House is Done!
The end result is so cool! This was such an easy craft and DIY! I love how mine turned out and I know you will too.
