I saw these firework garden stakes and knew I wanted to make them into firework flowers in a vase. This way, I could place them wherever I wanted around my home, and reuse them.

Step by Step Instructions:

Now it is time to make our firework flowers patriotic DIY!

Step One: Paint

First, I decided to paint my burgundy red fireworks into a brighter candy apple red. Now this part is optional. I am extra and wanted my red to be more colorful to match my ribbon. You can leave the burgundy red if you prefer.

I decided to use spray paint. If you only have red acrylic paint, that works too.

The nice part is that these fireworks pull right apart. So I was able to lift the prongs and separate the red easily. Then, I  was able to spray it easily without having to tape anything off.

Spray paint outside and allow it to dry fully.

Step Two: Decorate the Vase

Next, I want these to look like firework flowers so we need to place them in a vase. First, I need to decorate the vase. You can paint your vase if you would like. You can paint it all red or all blue. I decided to leave my vase galvanized, but to dress it up, I added a patriotic ribbon.

Since my vase was not perfectly square-shaped, I had to add the ribbon on each side independently. So I put hot glue along the edge of each side of the vase and attached the ribbon. Then, I would cut off the access. If the access is sticking out past a little I would just hot glue the end down. Repeat this process on all 4 sides of the vase if it is shaped like mine.

Does anyone else get super messy when painting or crafting, or is it just me?!

Step Three: Cut Down The Firework Flower Stems

These firework flowers were made to be garden stakes so they are a bit lengthy. They will need to be cut down to fit inside your vase. The length is your personal preference. I just kept cutting a little bit off at a time and placed it inside the vase to see how high it would stand above it. Once you are happy with the length you can use that one as a guide and cut your other fireworks to the same length or a little shorter if you want them to vary in height.

I didn’t have wire cutters so I used bolt cutters. Get creative and use what you have on hand.

Step Four: Assemble The Vase

Now, it is time to assemble. Place the floral foam block inside your vase. Then, place your firework flowers patriotic DIY stakes into the foam.

Once you are happy with the placements, place the white rocks over top of the foam to cover it completely. The white rocks help hide the foam and help the vase to stay weighted down in one place.

Variations You Can Do – Make It Your Own!

  • Instead of using the firework garden stakes I found, you can make a paper flower, you can make them out of tissue paper.
  • You can add a wood star to the front of your vase or a fun patriotic bow
  • Paint the vase, instead of leaving it
  • Add more sticks and patriotic-colored ribbons coming out of the vase

I love keeping out my patriotic decor all summer long! It is great for Memorial Day and the 4th of July!
