I love the Halloween Trees from Pottery Barn. The con to them? They are pricey! Although they are super cute, I didn’t want to pay that much and I know it’s not in everyone’s seasonal decor budget either. So I wanted to make a DIY one to show how you can achieve a similar look for less. Here is how I made my DIY halloween tree that you can do to just about any faux tree you find.
I found all my materials at the store Five and Below. I actually stumbled upon the materials by accident. We were just going to Five and Below to let my kiddos pick out a craft or game and of course I somehow found myself in the seasonal decor section by accident. Ok, ok I realized they had a seasonal home decor section and of course went straight there. To my surprise, they had everything I would need to make my DIY Halloween Tree. I was so excited and knew I needed to make one!
It is also a great reminder to always check out other stores. Sometimes, it creates happy “accidents” and unique finds. I don’t usually think of Five and Below for my home decor finds, but they did have just what I needed.
Who doesn’t love a simple and easy DIY craft? Also, making the tree saves you money. The Pottery Barn Tree was $69, my tree cost me $11 to make. If you can get the same look for less, why not? Of course, I am going to show you how to do it too!

If you do not have a Five and Below Store near you, here are some Amazon options I found if you would like to make your own DIY Halloween Tree.
Black Trees linked here. I found this 3 pack of black trees on Amazon. I love this because you can make 3 of them if you want. You can put them all around your house or even make a few as gifts.
Fairy Lights linked here. Any fairy lights will do. I prefer the ones with black wires because then they blend more with the tree.
Decorative Bats linked here. You can also get the packs that have more bats and use the leftover bats on your mantle as decor.
Decorative Bats Higher Quantity linked here. You can purchase this set if you want to not only use the bats for your DIY Halloween Tree but also for more Halloween decor around your home. You can use it on your fireplace mantle, on your front door, or porch. These are so fun and can be used in so many ways. I love purchasing decor that I can use it multiple areas of my home. It saves your money to use the same thing in multiple ways.

Easy Step By Step Instructions:
Step One: Paint your tree black. This step is only needed if you did not purchase a tree that was already black. Use the black spray paint and paint your tree black. Wait for the paint to completely dry before going to step two.
Step Two: Wrap the fairy lights around your tree. Do not worry if you see the black wire coming across the branches in spots, you can always place a decorative bat over that area to hide the wire if you want. Also, since the wire is black and the branches are black it doesn’t stand out too much.
Step Three: Place the decorative bats on the tree. You can use as many bats as you like and place them wherever you like. There is no right or wrong here, just whatever looks best to you. If I had a wire that was coming across between the two branches, I would put a bat over that wire to hide it. That’s it! That is how easy it is. I love how simple it was and how cute it turned out!
Making Things Instead of Buying
There is just something about being able to say I made that. I love filling my home with DIY Projects and crafts that I made, it just feels more special and surrounds me with things that I created.
Also, it saves you money. The Pottery Barn Tree was $69, my tree cost me $11 to make. If you can get the same look for less, why not? Of course, I am going to show you how to do it too!
